On September 9th – 11th, the 1st International OTEC Symposium was held, as side event of the Asia Clean Energy Summit. The International OTEC Symposium was co-hosted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management (OCRM) OTEC Team and the Korean Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) Deep Ocean Water Application Research Center (DOWARC) OTEC Team. The Symposium provided a platform for information exchange and discussion on OTEC with high-profile speakers from France, the Netherlands, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines and the USA who shared their vision on the roadmap towards the realisation of OTEC plants.
The Symposium included a visit to the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA), which is a unique ocean science and technology park home to about 40 innovative enterprises engaged in activities such as developing OTEC and growing shrimp, abalone, lobster, and micro algae, making use of the deep, mineral rich ocean water.
